How To Market Yourself As A Personal Trainer (Without Feeling Cringe)
Personal trainer marketing that works in the UK: pick a niche, build proof, and run a simple weekly content system — no dancing, no cold DMs, no paid ads required.
Most PTs hear "marketing" and picture cringe Instagram dances, spammy DMs and shouting into the void. So they avoid it entirely — and stay the best-kept secret in their gym.
Marketing yourself as a personal trainer is none of that. Done properly, it's three decisions and a weekly habit. This is the same framework as the Marketing module inside Forge Academy.
Decision 1: Pick One Person To Talk To
"Fat loss for everyone" is invisible. "Strength training for women over 40 who hate gyms" gets remembered, shared and searched for. When you market to one specific person:
- Your content becomes obvious — you know exactly what they worry about.
- Your referrals sharpen — clients say "you'd be perfect for my sister."
- Your price resistance drops — specialists get chosen, generalists get compared on price.
Look at your best current clients. What do they have in common? That's probably your niche. You can always broaden later; you can't build momentum from "everyone."
Decision 2: Build Proof Before Reach
Trainers obsess over follower counts while having nothing on their page that proves they get results. Proof beats reach every time. In order of power:
- Before/after photos and client numbers. "Sarah, down 9kg in 14 weeks" is worth more than 10,000 followers.
- Screenshots of client messages. Real words, real wins. (Ask permission.)
- Your face coaching. Videos of you cueing, correcting and encouraging — people buy the coach, not the exercises.
- Your opinions. "Three things I'd never let a new client do" positions you as the authority in your niche.
Get ten pieces of proof on your profile before you worry about growing anything.
Decision 3: Run The 3-Post Weekly System
Consistency beats volume. Three posts a week, every week, for six months will outperform daily posting for three weeks followed by silence. The rotation:
- Post 1 — Proof. A client result, a transformation, a screenshot, a win.
- Post 2 — Teaching. Answer one question your niche asks constantly. "Why the scales lie to women over 40." "How to fit training around shifts."
- Post 3 — Person. You coaching, your opinion, your story. People hire people.
We break this down post-by-post in our personal trainer Instagram strategy guide.
The Two Things That Are Not Marketing
Cold DMs. Copy-pasting "hey hun, want a free session?" to strangers burns your reputation faster than it builds a client base. DM conversations are fine — when they start from your content.
Discounting. Cutting your price is not a marketing strategy; it's a margin strategy that makes every future client harder to charge properly. If your diary is empty, the fix is more proof and more conversations, not cheaper sessions. Check what your pricing should actually be with the free PT income calculator.
Your First 30 Days
- Week 1: Pick your niche. Write the one sentence: "I help [who] get [result] without [thing they hate]."
- Week 2: Collect proof — message past and current clients for photos, numbers and testimonials.
- Week 3: Start the 3-post system. Book it in your diary like sessions.
- Week 4: Review. Which post got saved, shared, replied to? Make more of that.
Then repeat, for six months minimum. Marketing is a flywheel: slow to start, hard to stop.
