How To Get More Clients As A Personal Trainer (UK, 2026)
The seven client-getting channels that actually work for UK personal trainers in 2026 — ranked by speed and cost, with the exact weekly routine that fills a diary without paid ads.
Most personal trainers don't have a training problem — they have a pipeline problem. The diary has gaps, so income wobbles, so you say yes to clients you don't even want. This guide fixes the pipeline.
There are only seven channels that reliably produce PT clients in the UK. The mistake is trying all seven at once. The move is picking two, running them properly for 90 days, and measuring everything. This is the same system we teach in the Lead Generation module of Forge Academy.
The Seven Channels, Ranked
1. The Gym Floor (If You're Gym-Based)
Fastest and free. Every shift is a shop window. Ten genuine member conversations per shift — not sales pitches, conversations — produces two to three consult bookings a week on its own. If you're not talking to ten members per shift, this is your whole problem.
2. Referrals From Current Clients
Your clients know people exactly like themselves. But referrals don't happen by accident — you have to ask, and you have to make it easy. The script that works: "Who do you know that's been saying they need to sort their fitness out? I'd love to give them a free session like we did at the start of yours." Ask every client, once a month, forever.
3. Lead Magnets
A free guide that solves one specific problem for one specific person — "The Busy Mum's 15-Minute Fitness Guide", "The 40+ Belly Reset" — traded for an email address or a DM. This builds a list of local people who raised their hand before they ever spoke to you. Our free bottleneck check will tell you if lead flow is your weak link.
4. Instagram Content
Not dancing. Not motivational quotes. Proof: client results, your coaching voice, your opinion on the stuff your niche is confused about. Three posts a week, every week, aimed at one type of client. See our full personal trainer Instagram strategy.
5. Local Partnerships
Physios, hairdressers, beauticians, coffee shops, sports clubs — anyone who already serves your ideal client. One solid partnership (a physio who sends you their discharged patients) can be worth two clients a month, forever, for free.
6. Google Business Profile
If you train clients in a fixed location, a Google Business Profile with reviews is the highest-intent channel that exists: people searching "personal trainer near me" are ready to buy today. Set it up, get every happy client to leave a review, reply to all of them.
7. Paid Ads
The most powerful and the most dangerous. Ads amplify a working offer — they cannot fix a broken one. Don't touch Meta ads until you've converted at least 20 clients organically and know your numbers. When you're ready, the paid ads system is inside Forge Pro.
The Weekly Routine That Fills A Diary
Client-getting fails when it's random. It works when it's scheduled. Here's the baseline week we give trainers inside the Academy:
- Every gym shift: 10 member conversations. Non-negotiable.
- Monday: Ask two current clients for a referral.
- Tuesday + Thursday: Post proof-content to Instagram (a result, a client win, a strong opinion).
- Wednesday: One partnership touchpoint — message a physio, comment on a local business post, drop into a sports club.
- Friday: Review the numbers. Conversations → consults → closes. If a number is weak, that's next week's focus.
That's roughly five focused hours a week. Do it for 90 days and a full diary stops being a hope and becomes arithmetic.
Why "I Tried Everything" Usually Means "I Did Nothing Consistently"
The pattern we see constantly: a trainer posts on Instagram for two weeks, gets no clients, declares Instagram dead, prints flyers, gets nothing, declares flyers dead, then concludes "marketing doesn't work." Every channel has a 60–90 day lag. Two channels run for 90 days beat seven channels dabbed in for a fortnight each — every single time.
